Berimbao

The berimbao is probably one of the most important and representational instruments in Capoeria. Made of a special type of wood called Berimba, the beimbao is a type of long bow with a dried pumpkin shell attached to the bottom part of it with a string to create a sound box. The berimbao is a rhythmic musical instrument that leads the chorus accompanying the Capoeira game. Three types of Berimbao exist: Gunga , Media and viola, differing in size. The Berimbao is played using a small wooden stick while holding a sraw box called Cashishi. The sounds produced by this single-string instrument are varied by using a small stone held against the string in different positions to generate different tones.
