Maculele sticks

Maculele sticks are used in the traditional dance of the Maculele which is part of the Capoeira tradition. The sticks are about 18 inches long and 1.5 inches thick, made of Brazilian Biriba wood. Two dancers, each holding a pair of sticks , enter the Capoeira circle while the drum (Atabaque) starts playing the traditional Maculele rhythm. With the rhythm the dancers start pounding each other’s sticks together in rapid combinations and accompanied by dance movements. A high level of skill is required to perform this fast dance without mistakenly missing a bit and hurting the other’s hands.
